Once there was a boy from Barletta who didn’t even have a running track to train on. He ran uphill through the streets of his town, along the seafront, on an old concrete velodrome. The first time his coach, Carlo Vittori, saw him, he simply thought the boy needed to eat more. That boy’s name was Pietro Mennea, and he became one of the greatest sprinters in history.

On 12 September 1979, at the Universiade Games in Mexico City, Mennea ran the 200 metres in 19.72 seconds: a world record that would stand unbeaten for seventeen years, and still today the fastest time ever run by a European athlete over that distance. The following year, in Moscow, he also won Olympic gold. But perhaps the most striking part of the story isn’t the stopwatch — it’s what he did right after breaking the record. There was no dramatic celebration. He took out his training notebook and wrote down only the date and the time. Then he went back to training, as if that day had been just another day.

There’s a lesson in that quiet gesture that reaches well beyond athletics. Mennea wasn’t training for the record; he trained because he believed in daily work, on the track he didn’t have and had to build for himself, one session at a time. The record came as the result of years of repeated effort, not as a single stroke of luck.

How often do we, instead, wait for the perfect moment, the ideal conditions, “the right track”, before starting something that matters to us? Mennea’s story reminds us that it’s possible to begin even without everything we think we need, and that it is precisely in quiet consistency — the training sessions nobody sees, the small progress nobody celebrates — that we build what will one day look like an extraordinary feat.

Today, if there’s a goal you’ve been postponing while waiting for ideal conditions, try taking just one step, even a small one, towards it. You don’t need the perfect track. You just need to start.
