What does it really mean to “be well”? It’s not the absence of problems, and it’s not a burst of excitement that fades by evening. According to psychologist Carol Ryff, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, psychological wellbeing rests on six precise pillars — and knowing them helps you see where to actually invest your energy, at home and in everyday life.
The study
In her work published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (1989), Ryff identifies six dimensions of wellbeing: autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance. They aren’t separate compartments — they constantly intertwine. Two of them, according to the research, are among the most powerful to nurture together within a family: positive relationships and personal growth. Families that cultivate both together build more stable bonds over time, better equipped to hold up through hard moments.
It holds true beyond family in the strict sense too — with a partner, with close friends, with anyone you choose to grow a bond with over time. The point isn’t to chase constant happiness, but to build, day by day, a sense of direction and genuine connection with the people close to you.
What works in practice
You don’t need to overhaul your days. A few simple, consistent habits are enough:
- A weekly screen-free dinner where everyone shares one new thing they learned — even something small, even something ordinary.
- Treating mistakes — your own and other people’s — as steps of growth, not faults to hide.
- Asking the people you love what they want to learn this year, and actually supporting it — not just saying you will.
These are small gestures, but they change how a family — or any close relationship — moves through time together.
The takeaway
You don’t need a perfect family. You need a family — or a circle of people you care about — that chooses to grow together, one day at a time, even on the imperfect days.
