How many times has a shared laugh at the dinner table, during a silly game, or while watching a comedy together become one of your family’s favorite memories? A new study published in March 2026 confirms what many parents have long sensed: laughing together isn’t just pleasant — it’s a genuine tool for emotional bonding.

What the research shows

The research shows that shared laughter between parents and children actively strengthens the emotional bond, reduces parental stress, and helps children develop emotional self-regulation skills. Even before they can speak, children respond to their parents’ laughter — it’s one of the earliest channels of emotional attunement, alongside eye contact and physical touch.

A related line of research, published in BMC Psychology in 2025, qualitatively examined father-child play dynamics, showing how shared fun — even moments that seem “pointless” — contributes to children’s socio-emotional development and the quality of the parent-child relationship.

Why it works

  • It lowers everyone’s stress: laughing together lowers cortisol in both parents and children, creating a calmer family atmosphere.
  • It builds shared memory: funny moments become family memories that children spontaneously recall for years.
  • It supports self-regulation: learning to laugh at small everyday difficulties teaches children to better manage their own emotions.

No special planning needed: a silly game, a joke at dinner, a comedy watched together on the couch is enough. Science tells us these small everyday gestures carry enormous weight for the whole family’s wellbeing.
